The Diplomatic Correspondents’ Association of Nigeria (DICAN) today hosted its second annual international conference at the Rotunda Hall, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Abuja, focusing on the pressing issue of Information Warfare. Themed *“Information Warfare (FIMI): Strengthening Global Security, Trade, and Investment Through Collaborative Truth: Role of Diplomacy, Intelligence, and Media,” the event brought together diplomats, government officials, security and intelligence representatives, industry leaders, and media professionals.
In his welcome address, the Chairman of DICAN emphasized the rising threat of Foreign Information Manipulation and Interference (FIMI), highlighting how advanced technologies such as high-fidelity Generative AI are now being exploited to create deepfake crises and simulated market disruptions. The speech noted that such manipulation costs the global economy an estimated $100 billion annually, affecting investment, market stability, and security spending.
The conference showcased Nigeria’s proactive approach to countering disinformation. Through a partnership with The Centre for Communication Development and Diplomacy in Africa (CCDDA), DICAN, and PR Nigeria, 69 NGOs and civil society actors from across Nigeria have been mobilized to combat fake news. Six regional Situation Rooms have been established to monitor, verify, and analyze misinformation, culminating in the creation of the Nigeria Fact-Check & Information Integrity Network (NFIIN).
Delegates were urged to actively participate in a nationwide campaign against FIMI and fake news, aimed at promoting digital responsibility, peace, and public trust. The Chairman highlighted that this initiative is a collaborative effort that leverages the analytical depth of intelligence services, the strategic reach of diplomacy, and the integrity of media.
The conference also announced plans for the 2027 edition, which will focus on the intersection of information manipulation with security, migration, and human trafficking. Distinguished individuals and organizations demonstrating exceptional courage and integrity were recognized with Awards of Excellence during the event.
The 2026 DICAN International Conference marks a significant step in fostering a unified front against disinformation and strengthening Nigeria’s role in global information integrity.
