The University of Benin’s (UNIBEN) Sustainable Procurement, Environmental, and Social Standards Enhancement Centre of Excellence (SPESSECE) has conducted 36 executive short courses in Track A, surpassing the target and expectation for the first year. This part of the Centre’s mandate to deliver short courses and advanced certificate courses as well as postgraduate diplomas, bachelor’s and masters degrees in Procurement, Environmental Standards and Social Standards.
According to the Centre Leader, Professor Sylvester Osuji, who listed thethe achievements by of the UNIBEN SPESSCE the University of Benin SPESSECE to include the delivery of a series of capacity- building tracks in a sustainable manner in procurement, environmental standards, and social standards Nodes. He, he also revealed that the target of enrolling for Track A which includes 45 participants for Procurement, 35 for Environmental Node Standards and 35 for Social Standards Node in 2023 has been met.
The Centre also disclosed that the teaching of Track Acontinues to deliver short Courses courses has continued with timetable rolled out for the remaining part of 2023., it It has completed the first set of Track B (Advanced Certificate Courses) and admission for the second batch have has been advertised, for all three new students’ enrollment for the various Nodescomponents (procurement, environmental standards, and social standards).
Other achievementsaccomplishments of the Centre include that of Tracks C (PGD) and D (Masters’ Degree) whose curricula have been developed andand the approvedal of the curricula for the Centre’s masters programme by University of Benin’s Senate. The first set of students have been enrolled into the programme for the various Nodesall three components and . Students willthey are set to commence lectures by 1st of1 August 2023.
Track SPESSCE-UNIBEN is also on track to enrol students into its E (Bachelors’ Degree) undergraduate programmes, which curricula have also been approved by University’s of Benin Senate., the The Centre will beintends to admitting admit students from the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) from the 2023 batch results in for the 2023/2024 Academic academic Sessionsession.
Prof Osuji also disclosed that the remodelling of the University of Benin SPESSECE proposed building is ongoing and will be completed by the end of September 2023.

SPESSCE-UNIBENIt covers the Southsouth-South south Geopolitical geopolitical Region region of Nigeria in the SPESSE Programme , offering excellence and building capacity in with the execution implementation of the SPESSE programmeProject.
The Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) with assistance from the World Bank is implementing the Sustainable Procurement, Environmental and Social Standards Enhancement Project – SPESSE. The project development objective is to develop sustainable capacity in managing procurement, environment and social safeguards in the public sector. SPESSE is conceived on the need to bridge the gap between insufficient supply of quality professionals in the procurement, environmental and social sectors and the lack of academic programmes and curriculum in these sectors in the Nigerian education system. The cornerstone of SPESSE implementation is the creation of Centres of Excellence (CE) in Nigerian Universities to deliver a series of capacity building tracks in a sustainable manner in procurement, environmental and social standards. These areas include: Track A (short courses), Track B (Advanced Certificate Courses), Tracks C (PGD), Track D (Masters’) and Track E (Bachelors’). The University of Benin Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Procurement, Environmental and Social Standards Enhancement is one of the six centres established to address the challenges as stated. It is expected to serve as a catalyst for the speedy reduction in waste of resources and corrupt practices with respect to these target areas. The root causes of these problems are a lack of qualified practitioners in procurement, environment, and social standards. Due to these, there is prevailing incapacity at the level of enforcement of basic standards and risk management in the target areas.

Since the establishment of the programme, the University of Benin Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Procurement, Environmental and Social Standards Enhancement has delivered a series of capacity building tracks in a sustainable manner in procurement, environmental and social standards Nodes.
The Centre has conducted 36 executive short courses in Track A, which surpassed year 1 target/expectation.
The target for Track A (45 for Procurement, 35 for Environmental Node and 35 for Social Standard Node) in 2023 has been met.
