FG Commends CHEC on Delivery of Mararaba–Keffi Highway Project

The Federal Government has commended China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) for the successful reconstruction and expansion of the Mararaba–Keffi Highway, describing the project as a strong example of quality engineering, innovation, and effective public–private collaboration in infrastructure delivery.

The Minister of Works, David Umahi, gave the commendation on Saturday during an inspection of the 43.65-kilometre dual carriageway linking the Federal Capital Territory to parts of Nasarawa State. The corridor remains one of the busiest transport routes in the North-Central region.

The project, awarded by the Federal Ministry of Works in June 2023 under the Federal Road Infrastructure Development and Refurbishment Investment Tax Credit Scheme, was executed at a cost of N73.9 billion.

Following the inspection, Umahi expressed satisfaction with the quality and pace of work, noting that the highway had reached substantial completion and would soon be ready for commissioning by President Bola Tinubu.

He praised CHEC for maintaining high standards throughout execution despite operational challenges, and for accepting engineering innovations introduced by the ministry. These include the use of rigid concrete shoulders alongside flexible pavement on the main carriageway.

According to him, the design adjustment will improve structural strength, reduce erosion-related damage, and extend the lifespan of the road, making it more durable and cost-efficient in the long term.

Umahi said the project reflects the Federal Government’s broader commitment to modernising critical transport infrastructure and improving connectivity between Abuja and neighbouring states.

He added that only minor finishing works and corrective adjustments identified during inspection remained before formal inauguration.

The minister also commended Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule for complementary infrastructure efforts along the corridor, particularly the construction of flyovers aimed at easing congestion and improving traffic flow.

He further urged the release of outstanding payments under the NNPC Tax Credit Scheme, noting that presidential approval had already been secured. According to him, timely settlement of contractual obligations is essential to sustaining contractor confidence and ensuring continuity of key infrastructure projects nationwide.

The Federal Controller of Works overseeing the project, Engr. Yakubu Usman, said the highway is now 99.8 per cent completed. He explained that remaining works include kerbs, drainage structures, and street lighting installations.

He described the project as a benchmark for future road construction, particularly due to its improved shoulder design, which enhances pavement protection and durability.

Chairman of China Harbour Engineering Company, Wang Wenfei, expressed appreciation to the Federal Government, the Ministry of Works, and the National Assembly for their support throughout the project.

He assured that the company would address all outstanding observations to ensure the road is fully ready for commissioning.

Upon completion, the upgraded Mararaba–Keffi Highway is expected to significantly reduce travel time, improve road safety, ease congestion, and stimulate economic activities along the Abuja–Nasarawa transport corridor.
